Johnstown In Black & White is an ongoing photoessay project. My goal is to document "disappearing Johnstown" by taking pictures of old and unique places and things. Click HERE to view a slideshow.
JOHNSTOWN, THEN AND NOW
Luke Swank was a scion of Johnstown's successful Swank family. On the left, above, is a photograph that Swank captured in 1930; on the right is my attempt to take a photograph of the same scene in 2006.
Fifty years after Swank's photograph, Lee Friedlander took a photo in Franklin Borough for his book, Factory Valleys.
These side-by-side comparisons clearly illustrate the decline of basic steelmaking in the Johnstown area.
